An Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) campaign – namely, the No Time to Lose Initiative – aimed at addressing the alarming number of deaths which result from work-related cancers, is proving to be a success, Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) have been told.
The Cross Party Group on Accident Prevention and Safety Awareness, which is made up of MSPs, organisations and members of the public, heard the encouraging news when it recently met at Holyrood in Edinburgh.
Beginning towards the end of 2014, the campaign has already attracted support from major organisations such as Jaguar Land Rover and the Royal Mail Group, together with a multitude of smaller businesses.
IOSH wants the campaign to continue its momentum. and has stressed the importance of governments, businesses, regulators and professionals across the world, to continue to collaborate to minimise the risk of occupational cancers being contracted.
Speaking on behalf of IOSH, the organisation's President Elect, Dr Karen McDonnell, called for more Scottish businesses to sign up to the campaign:
"Partnership working is fundamental to the success of our campaign. IOSH is seeking to work together with stakeholders across Scotland to reduce the number of cases of cancer caused by work."
More generally, Dr McDonnell also stressed the importance of governments, businesses, regulators and professionals across the world, to continue to collaborate to minimise the risk of occupational cancers being contracted.
IOSH estimates that 8,000 people in the United Kingdom die from occupational cancers each year, while there are somewhere in the region 666,000 worldwide deaths over the same period.
