Health and safety in the UK Aviation industry is to be the focus of a conference hosted by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's (IOSH) later this month (2 July, Imperial War Museum, Duxford).
Following a number of major aviation incidents, such as the recent Germanwings plane crash, IOSH's Aviation and Aerospace Group plan to illustrate the best ways for Aviation workers/employees and bosses to prepare for and mange similar crisis'. IOSH also hope to improve industry continuity.
As well as the IOSH team mentioned above, several aviation industry experts will address the conference delegates.
Commenting on the matter, Chair of IOSH's Aviation and Aerospace Group, Ross Coppolo, stated:
"Managing safety has always been top of the agenda within the aviation sector. Unfortunately, a series of unforeseen tragedies have really brought the issue of crisis management back to the forefront of people's attention.
"I think certainly the recent Germanwings plane crash in the French Alps really did send ripples through the aviation industry and highlight the importance of knowing how to carry out a recovery with dignity, and how to support business continuity in the aftermath of such incidents.
"We want to offer delegates an opportunity to learn how leading aviation professionals prepare for significant events, so they can review within their own organisations what crisis management and business continuity plans are in place and whether they are fit for purpose."
Taking a step further, IOSH with the help of the Civil Aviation Authority and the Health and Safety Executive, are launching an airside driving safety training DVD to increase awareness of the hazards throughout aviation.
Ross said: "Aircraft turnaround often has to take place in a short timeframe, with some airlines operating with as little as 25 minutes between flights. The number and variety of staff and vehicles involved in such a tight operation brings with it its own risks.
"We hope the DVD will prove useful for both employers and employees and increase knowledge of the hazards that exist when driving airside."
