In the coming weeks, the focus will very much be on assessing and controlling the risks of fires and explosions in the workplace thanks to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's (IOSH).

The organisation has arranged an event – namely, Fire and Explosion - Controlling Dangerous Substances' - aimed at helping health professionals, particularly in the chemical process industry, minimise the risks of fires and explosions.

Major incidents, such at the Hickson and Welch fire of 1992 and the Flixborough disaster, will be used as a warning and to illustrate the consequences of improper health and safety processes.

Commenting on the importance of the event, Lee Patterson of IOSH stated:

"We felt that this is a cross-cutting issue, which is relevant to many industries. Our speakers have extensive knowledge and experience on the subjects they are presenting.

"This event aims to provide health and safety practitioners and those who work in the chemical process safety or similar industries with practical guidance relating to assessing and controlling fire and explosion risk and emergency planning for worst case scenarios."

Gary Laird, also of IOSH and in particular, the Chair of the organisation's Fire Risk Management Group, who will be speaking at the upcoming event, said:

"I will be speaking about fire risk assessment, how to carry it out and the issues that arise. Those in the industry are duty bound to make sure the proper procedures are followed."
