In a meeting with members of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), racehorse breeders from Coolmore Ireland Stud, - which is Ireland's largest thoroughbred racehorse breeding outfit - demonstrated their commitment to safety and health.
On their visit to the Co. Tipperary breeding operation, members of IOSH's Rural Industries Team were able to learn about equine and agricultural management generally as well as the safety management systems employed on-site. Accordingly, IOSH's members could assess if/how workers are protected.
Commenting, the Chair of IOSH Ireland Branch's Rural Industries, Aine English, stated:
"The investment and commitment from the Coolmore team in safety is quite evident. The safety systems in place cover all aspects from farming to animal handling.
"Due to its primary business of breeding Coolmore has stallions in situ. During this busy time of year staff not only cover Coolmore mares but they also have to manage a vast number of visiting mares to the site, and the inherent risks associated.
"The farm itself is also self-sufficient from growing crops to hay production. The hazards associated with farming are managed successfully on a day-to-day basis.
"Investment in machinery and training had been a priority on the site, while contractor management is also an area managed very effectively."
